A Note From the Author.
Hi,
My name is Mitch Bradley. I am the proprietor of Bradley Forthware and
the author of Forthmacs. This file describes my policy about making and
giving away copies of Forthmacs. In general, you are free to give away
copies of the Forthmacs Working Disk subject to a few restrictions.
Copyright
Forthmacs is copyrighted. This means that I retain the ownership of
Forthmacs. However, I hereby give you permission to use, make and give
away copies of the "Forthmacs Working Disk Version 1.0". The "Forthmacs
Working Disk" contains the files listed in the file FILES.LST

Having used many computer languages extensively, I think that Forth
is the most productive language that has yet been invented.
I think that Forthmacs is one of the very best Forth systems available
today, for any computer, for any price. Forthmacs is the result of
4 years of intensive Forth development work on a number of 68000 based
computers. Forthmacs is full of features to make programming easy, and
to give you total control of your computer. I'm proud of this software.
If you like Forthmacs, you can show your appreciation for my effort by
sending me $50. I'll make it worth your while by sending you a complete
Forthmacs manual and some other goodies.
You can use Forthmacs without paying me anything, but consider:
a) $50 is a very low price for a system this good.
b) Your support will enable me to continue improving Forthmacs
and to make it available for future computers.
Your $50 Contribution
If you send in $50, you'll be a registered Forthmacs user, and I'll say
"Thank You" with:
- An up-to-date copy of the "Forthmacs Working Disk"
- A printed 200+ page Forthmacs manual
As a registered user, you can:
- Get new updates at any time (for a small fee)
- Purchase the Forthmacs source code.
- Find out about new products.
- Receive support as described below.
Support
I can't afford to provide telephone support for these prices, but I will
answer questions from registered users if they send me a letter. If you
need telephone support, we can negotiate a price depending on the level
of support that you require.
Bugs
Forthmacs is very solid software. I don't know of any bugs, but I would
be pretty surprised if a few aren't hiding in there somewhere. I don't
like to have bugs in my software. If you find one, send me a letter
(presumably after you've sent in your $50) and I'll probably fix it.
Keep in mind, though, that there is sometimes a fine line between a
"bug" and a "feature". Also, in some cases the effort required to fix
something is way out of line with the benefits; in those cases it's often
better to find a workaround. So, no guarantees, but I'll do my best to
make Forthmacs as bug-free as is practical.
Licensing
Suppose that you develop software that runs under Forthmacs and wish to
distribute your software along with Forthmacs. If you give away your
software, you may also give away a copy of Forthmacs with it, so long as
you give away the entire "Forthmacs Working Disk", with nothing removed.
You are free to put it on bulletin boards if you wish, again with the
stipulation that you put the entire "Forthmacs Working Disk" there.
If you plan to sell your software, please get in touch with me so we can
work out a licensing agreement. Forthmacs may not be sold as part of
any system without a licensing agreement. I'll be willing to work out
an agreement that is fair to both of us.
Copying Fees
If you normally charge a fee for making someone a copy of a disk, you
may charge the same fee for making a copy of Forthmacs. The fee must be
based solely on the cost of making the copy, and must be the same fee
that you charge for a copy of any other disk.
My Address
Bradley Forthware
P.O. Box 4444
Mountain View, CA 94040
Isn't that P.O. Box number great? It just happened that way; I didn't
ask for that number!
Liability
Bradley Forthware shall have no liability or responsibility to any
person or entity with respect to any loss or damage caused or alleged to
be caused directly or indirectly by Forthmacs. This includes, but is
not limited to, any interruption of service, loss of business, loss of
information or that which is rendered inaccurate, or loss of anticipated
profits or ANY OTHER CONSEQUENTIAL OR INCIDENTAL DAMAGES RESULTING FROM
THE USE OF Forthmacs, even if Bradley Forthware has been advised of the
possibility of such damages.
Distribution
Copies of the Forthmacs Working Disk may be obtained from:
San Leandro Computer Club
P.O. Box 1525
San Leandro, CA 94577-0152
or from anybody willing to make you a copy.
Earlier Versions
There are some preliminary copies of this software floating around. I
would like for them to be replaced with this version, because the older
version has a number of bugs and deficiencies. If you know people
with old copies, I'd appreciate it if you would provide them with this
version. The older copies, instead of saying "Forthmacs version 1.0"
when started, say "68000 Forth 83 - Atari 520 version".
Acknowledgements
I am grateful to Mike Perry and Henry Laxen for their excellent public
domain F83 model, which served as a starting point for Forthmacs several
years ago, and especially to Mike Perry for many fruitful discussions
over the years. Also thanks to Jesse Taylor for providing the Line A and
VDI interface code, Timothy Huang for the AES interface code, Bill Sebok
for 16/32 bit portability discussions, and Jesse Taylor and David Anderson
for invaluable feedback about earlier versions.
